About Made in the USA Bags & Totes

How often have you heard “Made in the USA!” proudly emblazoned on products, from food to apparel, vehicles to building components?

A lot, we’re guessing, because companies are proud of providing this service to their clients and customers. Not only does the United States have a long and rich history of manufacturing, the products it makes are typically of high quality, better than that you can find abroad – especially in such manufacturing-heavy economies such as China, Taiwan, Vietnam or Cambodia, to name just a few.

That’s not to say we shouldn’t support these countries in providing better-made products. It merely means that the USA still has awesome products that are worth supporting too … and you can totally do that with promotional bags and totes, which have the additional benefit of mad marketing benefits.

So why does U.S. manufacturing matter, and how can you do your part to start supporting it today?

Why Should You Support U.S. Products?

Manufacturing is one of the things that has made our country great. As The Balance points out, “U.S. manufacturing is the largest in the world. It produces 18.2 percent of the world's goods. That's more than the entire economic output of Canada, Korea, or Mexico. But America's leadership position is threatened by high operating costs. That gives a competitive edge to other countries. First among these is China. Its low-cost factories manufacture 17.6 percent of the world's products.”

The statistics underline this importance mightily. For instance, according to the same source:

  • Manufacturing was $2.25 trillion in 2016
  • It drove 11.7 percent of the economic output that same year
  • Our manufactured goods comprise a full 50 percent of U.S. exports
  • For every dollar we spend in manufacturing, the economy sees a $1.89 growth in other sectors
  • The U.S. has 12.5 million manufacturing jobs
  • This accounts for more than 8 percent of the total workforce
  • Manufacturing jobs pay an average of 12 percent more than in other industries
  • There are more than 600,000 manufacturing jobs waiting for workers with the right skills

As you can see, this is an incredibly important industry to support, and the more we can do to support manufacturing here at home, the better.

Plus, it’s critical to realize how much better for the world and its people U.S. manufacturing is compared to many of the other countries who provide those services.

How Does U.S. Manufacturing Differ from That in Other Countries?

Unfortunately, much of the manufacturing processes that take place in other countries have lower regulatory standards and therefore cause considerably more harm to the environment and its people. This includes such negatives as:

  • Chemicals from manufacturing plants pouring into waterways and the air
  • Toxins and carcinogens getting into human drinking water, causing disease and cancer
  • Low wages and abusive factory conditions
  • Degradation of the environment through predation of natural resources without replacement
  • Sickness and loss of habitat for wildlife
  • Low recycling and reuse of materials
  • Lots of waste

… and many other issues. While these are getting better, the USA’s major head start in manufacturing means it has much higher regulatory standards and so protects the environment and its people much better.

That makes it so important that you take a stand in favor of the U.S., at least with part of your marketing budget.

How Can You Start Supporting U.S. Makers Today?

There are many different ways to support U.S. makers, of course. You can write into your representatives or vote to make commercial ventures more accessible here on U.S. soil. You can sell those products in your own store to help your clients and customers do their part. And you can buy them yourself and give them away to do your own part with aplomb.

Also, it’s very important to funnel more work toward the manufacturing industry if we want to get more people into the field. One of the biggest problems in any industry is when its jobs aren’t interesting or lucrative enough to attract top talent. Many STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) or STEAM (with “art” added in) industries are lacking in good candidates because of this. If we offer more to such people, then more people will choose to major in these subjects in college and add their skills to the world.

And, as such, to America.

The good news is, supporting U.S. manufacturing is a great way to enhance your business success. According to studies, bags receive upward of 6,000 impressions throughout their lifetime. That translates to 1,000 impressions per dollar, which is better than tee shirts, calendars, pens, billboards and media ads get by a longshot. The closest competition clocks in at only 500 impressions, meaning you stretch your marketing dollar big time by opting for branded bags as part of your plan.

So what kinds of bags are we talking about?

  • Document Totes: Totes designed specifically to carry papers, these are perfect for trade shows, conventions, medical offices, law firms, tax preparers and other businesses that need to hand out precious papers and don’t want them to get ruined in transition.
  • Natural Canvas Totes: Natural canvas is always a top seller. It’s beautiful and natural, and we grow lots of cotton right here in the USA, so it makes use of a raw material from home as well. That’s double the American power!
  • Boat Totes: These giant bags have lots of room for storage. Whether your customers are gym rats or beach bums, these are bound to appeal to them. You can also fill them with holiday gifts for valued clients whom you want to thank for large services – think legal or medical, for instance.
  • Grocery Sacks: Everyone loves a good reusable bag for the grocery store. There’s nothing more common than grabbing your reusable bags as you head inside to do some shopping, and it’s a great time for your customers to flash your logo to the world. Free marketing!
  • Fold-Flat Bags: Bags and totes that fold flat are a boon to every store and business. Because they’re so easy for you to store, you can order in bulk and get great rates for your marketing budget. Their easy fold-up nature also makes it easy for clients and customers to store them so they’ll keep them for years.

Every Little Bit Counts

No one needs to tell you that the path to change is composed of little steps, not huge steps. Sure, Neil Armstrong did make one small step that translated to one giant leap, but most of us aren’t so lucky. If we want to make meaningful change in the world, it means voting with our dollars, showing companies and businesses what we care about.

This has two main benefits. Firstly, you tell your clients and customers that you’re committed to the environment and social justice. This not only increases their awareness of important issues, it makes them likelier to work with you, because in so doing they get to make positive change as well. Also, it sends a message to U.S. manufacturers that they’re doing something right, so they’ll keep doing it.

Even if a company only makes part of their products here in the United States, it’s still really important to support them. The more of your precious marketing budget you can devote to U.S. manufacturing, the more those companies will be able to offer this more-expensive but important service.

At the end of the day, it’s all about values. Do you want to keep America great? Do you want to support businesses that are trying to make change? Would you like to provide jobs to your own countrymen and countrywomen? If so, it’s time to make the right choice and source more of your products from right here in the U.S. ReuseThisBag can help you do just that, so give us a call at 877.334.5323 today.
